  • ↗Bookshelf · Patrick Collison

I sometimes post book recommendations on Twitter and people often respond asking if I have an overall list of books I think are worth reading. I don't, and end up feeling a bit guilty about being so haphazard. So, maybe this will be interesting to some people: below is a fairly complete catalog of the physical books I own. I always enjoy reading others' lists and browsing their bookshelves, so ...

  • ↗Why Delegating Tasks Before a Vacation Never Works

Have you ever returned to work from a vacation only to stare in disbelief at unfinished work you believed you’d carefully assigned to others? It’s frustrating, but the fault may actually lie in your own approach to delegation. The necessary work starts way before you set up your “out of office” message. All too often, managers confuse true delegation with simply asking staff members to do things — usually to lighten their own load. But that doesn’t create the accountability or empowerment people need to really own the task. Before you delegate a task, think through how handing it off might develop the other person’s skills or make use of their unique strengths. And when you hand it off, focus the conversation not only on key deliverables and outcomes, but also on what the employee will learn or gain by owning the task. And the next time you come back from vacation, you should find the work humming along without you.

  • ↗How to Talk to an Employee Who Isn’t Meeting Their Goals

Having to tell someone that they’re not meeting their work standards can get awkward fast. Luckily, simply asking them to evaluate themselves can do a lot of the work for you. If they can spot the problems on their own, it saves you a lot of trouble. If not, make sure that your goals and visions are aligned. State the non-negotiables and how it can help them further their career. Be clear about your employee’s failings by describing specific examples and behaviors you observed, giving them guidelines about how they can get back on track. Ask them to create an improvement plan and then review together, filling any gaps they might have missed, setting deadlines, and explaining repercussions if the goals are not met. Confrontation about shortcomings is much easier when it’s done with a shared vision, clear expectations, and a plan to move forward.

  • ↗The Art of Asking Great Questions

While listening is an important skill, the art of asking questions is equally, if not more, important when it comes to learning more about your work tasks, unlocking hidden opportunities, delivering better results, and mitigating unforeseen risks. Great questions have three main characteristics: Great questions demonstrate that you’re thoroughly prepared for a conversation. When you convey to your client, colleague, or manager that you did your homework and are aware of the broader situation, they’ll feel respected and be more inclined to share information that makes it easier for you to do your job well. Great questions illustrate the expertise you bring to the table, without showing it off. When you try to show off, the topic of the conversation starts revolving around you. A good conversation requires both parties to get a chance to speak and understand each other. Great questions invite others to deepen or broaden their thinking, and challenge their beliefs. Such questions will likely be reciprocated with loyalty and trust. They can also help uncover new opportunities for you and your clients or colleagues. If you don’t stretch yourselves, neither of you will grow.
